NY-23 Adwatch: Going after McHugh on Accountability

As some of you probably know, I work for the Democrat Bob Johnson in this NY-23 race, so this is by no means an impartial diary. In fact, I made the ad here, so your comments and suggestions will go straight to the source, so to speak.

This ad is a stark, aggressive ad. We wanted to go after McHugh's main characteristic: his complete ineffectiveness. Our nation has huge issues, and we just can't afford to have a Congressman who just disappears when it matters ... and we wanted a striking visual to illustrate that. We were aiming for something a bit more memorable than your average "grainy slo-mo of the politician."

(more below the flip)

First, here's the ad (it's an image-link; embedding YouTube doesn't seem to be working):

This is a general ad; we're introducing a general theme with a couple of specific issues that will be at the heart of what we're doing. This is highly focused on McHugh and those two issues; we wanted to keep the focus on those issues, so you won't hear the name "Bush" in this version of the ad (but there are other versions ... )

John McHugh seems like a moderate, innocuous guy, but he's really the ultimate incumbent, seemingly far more interested in his position than actually doing anything about the problems facing our county. He's a particularly empty rubber-stamp. He votes more conservative than his image and far more conservative than his district. Our district, while it has a strong GOP registration advantage, actually splits about 51R-49D on contested federal elections. Gore+half-Green was over 50% in 2000. So this should be a swing district.

So we're going to try to pin him down. He's talking about micro-issues and pork; we're trying to keep the focus on the big issues. If we're successful, his pork focus will play into our strategy of pointing out how he's disappeared on the big issues.

So, there ya go ... our ad, with a bit of explanation. Have at it ... but be nice ;-)

... and, of course, if you like the ad and want us to run it early and often, please contribute.
